We are starting a new series entitled, “Simon Says”. We are going to learn about obedience and what it means to obey God. We will search God’s Word to learn how we are called to obey God. Simon says…let’s go!

This week’s “MAILBOX” WINNER is……Juliette Miller!!! Congratulations Juju! You were selected from the “mailbox” as the activity sheet prize winner for this week! You can pick up your prize at church any coming Sunday…it will be located at the kids check-in. And honorable mentions go to Jaxson Miller, Emma Vicente, and Andrew Harper! All three of you can also pick up a special treat at the kids check-in.

Our current theme is, “Obeying God.” This week we are going to talk about how God deserves our obedience, and that consequence comes with disobedience.

What is a consequence? It is something that happens after a choice is made. It is the effect or result of something that happened earlier. Think about a ball…if you throw it high in the air, what is going to happen? It is going to fall back down. If you choose to throw the ball high over a neighbor’s fence, what is the consequence going to be? The ball is now going to be in their yard. If you throw a raw egg high in the air, what is the consequence going to be? It will either smash in your hands or on the ground…and make a mess! And then you may get another “consequence” from mom or dad…whoops! Did you know that God gives us consequences for our actions?

The 10 commandments “command” us to honor God through our lives – both internal actions (with our hearts and minds) and our external actions (what we do and how we treat others). Does your life honor God? Do you make good choices and obey God? Or bad choices that disobey God? Romans 14:12 reminds us that we are going to have to stand before God and give reason for all of our “actions” on earth…does that make you excited or nervous? That makes me a nervous, because I know not all of my actions are good…and they deserve bad consequences. Let’s take a look at an example of when some people obeyed God and others did not…

Do you have the electronic game, “Simon”? Or do you have a “Bop-it”? Or maybe you have neither but you have played the in-person game Simon Says. All of these games have one thing in common…you must follow the commands in the right order. If you don’t listen, you will lose the game. Your “consequence” is being knocked out of the game. These games are fun to play, but can also be good reminders that obeying the rules is important…and more importantly, obeying God matters! And just like the games have consequences, so does our behavior…the good news is, even when we sin and disobey God, He offers us a second chance…if we confess our sin (admit what we have done wrong), ask for forgiveness (Jesus died on the cross so we could be forgiven), and repent (turn from our sin and do better next time).

Take a moment to pray and ask God to help you search your heart for any sin you may be struggling with. If God brings something to mind (maybe the way you treat your brother or sister, or the attitude you give mom or dad, or complaining, ungratefulness, etc)…confess your sin, ask God for forgiveness (and maybe the person you sinned against), and repent – do better moving forward!

Play it! If you have one of those games (Simon, Bop-it), then play a few rounds! See how high of a score you can get! If you don’t, ask your family to play a couple rounds of Simon Says. Explain that these games remind us of how we are to listen to God’s commands and obey them…or there will be consequences! 😉

“You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life.”

Deuteronomy 30:20 (September’s Memory Verse)

LESSON PAPERWORK – Review, Activities, & Prizes

Below are some options for you to continue the lesson from home. There is a review sheet for conversation purposes and there are grade level activity sheets as well. These are available (in print) on Sunday mornings near the Kids’ Check-In Station, and there will also be a “mailbox”. Grab one, complete it in the sanctuary, and return the completed activity sheet to the mailbox after service. You will have a chance to win prizes each week. They are available to download here in case your family is not able to return for in-person worship yet…parents can scan/text pictures of completed sheets to Pastor Vicky to be entered in the weekly prize drawing. A winner will be drawn each Monday, and if you miss a week, you can put both activity sheets (previous two lessons) in the mailbox the following Sunday. Let’s dive into God’s Word and grow together in the Lord! PS: You may need a Bible, so be sure to bring your Bible each Sunday.
